Fortnight Feature No. 3 – #Social Media

Walden Pond is now a Costco

Can you imagine telling Thoreau about Facebook or Twitter? About Reddit?

There’s a chance the king of quiet contemplation would warm to the new era of hyper-connectivity. Or, there’s a chance he would have spearheaded this current movement to unplug and recharge.

Either way, he likely would have taken his own advice when determining whom to pay attention to and whom to ignore:

“A bore is someone who takes away my solitude and doesn’t give me companionship in return.”

No one likes a bore. And in this era of endangered solitude, people value their “me-time” more than ever.

As a business, you probably can’t offer companionship (and in most states, you probably shouldn’t). But you can offer entertainment, information, or savings. The point is, if you want to take a place in someone’s overcrowded network, you have to give them something. Otherwise, they will resent the intrusion.

If you provide immediate value to the consumer and represent your brand with a genuine tone, you can boost your business through the exponentially vast reach of social media. The following articles are some great resources that we uncovered during our two-week investigation of the topic.
